Area unlocked: Jacksonville, FL

May 22, 2009

This post has been a long time coming.

During the middle of last week, I took a trip to Jacksonville, FL

Why ? to see what it was like out there. Well, I went looking for RIBS also…

Seriously, at some point in the near future I we shall be leaving the land of the ‘Noles (and Rattlers) to “seek out new life and new civilizations” (give yourself 5 points if you get the reference) Star Trek

I decided since I had some newly acquired spare time, I would go ahead and check out this place to see what all the fuss was about.

When I actually got there the weather was pretty bad, so I ended up staying in my hotel room the whole night watching the Playoffs. I did manage to sneak out and get some pizza from a place I heard about from my Tour Guide 🙂

The next day, I actually went  out and did some Sight Seeing. I went to a Museum, and took pictures of the wildlife and other. I went ahead and added a photo gallery of all the good shots I took around town. there are mini stories with some of them when you click that specific picture. Enjoy.

I thought I was going to have a drama free trip, but I was wrong. As I walked to the Rib place with my tour guide (who is white, not that it matters to me, but is vital for the story) there was a group of people eating outside of a restaurant and decided to yell “Thank God for Obama” as we walked by. I wasn’t aware ignorance was still alive in the south =/ in Florida no less. When I think “Racist South” Florida doesn’t sit at the top of my list, but that’s just me. This guy disagrees.  (please don’t be offended by the “Racist South link… I couldn’t resist)

My tour guide thinks it was coincidental that the man yelled that as we walked past… but I know better. When your birthday is the Day after Malcolm X’s and the day Florida celebrates “Emancipation Day” your “Racial Senses” tend to tingle more than others…

There is Racism afoot !!!

There is Racism afoot !!!

Finally, I would like to say that I am aware that I did not cover all of Jacksonville. It took close to 3o minutes to get anywhere, and I only had one day to check the city out; but from what I saw, It was nice. Nice enough to maybe move out there; naturally that depends on the economy and job market and all those other important adult things… I think I might need to do a couple more of these “discovery trips” to check out the rest of the state. Any suggestions on where I should visit next?

A special thanks to my Tour Guide for showing me the sights and sounds of Jacksonville. Your services maybe needed on a later date 🙂

Monday 27 *updated*

May 18, 2009

It’s the Monday before my Birthday.

Here’s what you might have missed since last week:

That was about it. There should be tons more but alas, I’m not allowed to do much from my computer at work… M. Bison and co. forbids it.

I should take this time to mention that if you missed the “Big News” in my blog from Last Monday, I strongly suggest you reread it. I’ve heard some people say the secret was easy to find, some people say it was way too hard, and some people still can’t find it…

There will be times where I will hide things in my blog. I do it for fun, and I do it to give you something to do other than skim through it. If you still haven’t figured out the big secret; I’ll formally announce it Next Monday.

For some reason, Our Desktop has stopped working. Of course by “ours” I mean Mrs. Blogmasters. She has no idea what she’s done to it, or what she “didn’t do” she just knows it isn’t working. I gave it a pretty thorough examination; I don’t like what I need to do to fix it, but I’m out of ideas.

I’m currently waiting to hear about a possible opportunity to be a “Intern Blogger” for a video game website. I was hanging out on Twitter one day when I heard about this opportunity. I took the necessary steps, and hopefully I’ll get chosen. Even if I don’t, I’m glad that I’ve given it a chance.

Things to look forward to this week (hopefully):

  • My travels across the state
  • Audio Crack featuring Eminem’s New album
  • An official “Birthday Blog”
  • My first week back to work. (by suggestion of Mrs. Blogmaster)

And that is all I have for this week; For now at least. I’ll try to sneak in the “One Fresh Stir-Fry” Password of the week later on today.

** This Just in **

Say “Quesadilla my way” @ One Fresh Stir-Fry this week for a free topping. I don’t think I need to remind you all, but this place is a GREAT place to eat; So great a place that they don’t even know that I’m giving them free publicity !!!

A special “Sak Passee to all of my Favorite Haitians as today is “Haitian Flag day

Battle of the Ribs

May 16, 2009

During my Travels in Jacksonville a while ago, my super cool Tour Guide took me a place who has their own sauce for ribs… you know what that means:

We're a big deal; We sell our own Sauce

We're a big deal; We sell our own Sauce

Sticky Fingers of Jacksonville vs.  Shane’s Rib-Shack of Tallahassee.

As I sit in the new place, I must say that  I’m impressed with the overall design of the place it’s a little more upscale than Shane’s, but I think that’s mainly because they are after a different crowd. They have live music Friday and Saturday nights and they are located near the beach. Our Server for the evening was actually a cool guy, he was to the point, answered our questions and made pretty good suggestions. I get the Rib sampler and my Tour Guide gets a Chicken Salad; she tells me that she’s allergic to BBQ sauce…

I wept for her Stomach…

Alright, on to the food !!!

I'm sure we're better than Tallahassee; We put lime on OUR ribs.

I'm sure we're better than Tallahassee; We put lime on OUR ribs.

First, I have the Dry Rub ribs.  I must admit, the meat itself was very moist and prepared right; I just  wasn’t impressed with the rub flavoring; I’m very glad I had soda to help wash it all down.
They lost points for having a bug in my tour guide’s salad. It was very disturbing actually. They were nice in handling the situation quickly. Her food was free; I still had to pay for mine… needless to say I was looking for a way to get free food cautious of my own food …

The Tennessee whiskey ribs were alright, they had an interesting flavor, I blame it on the alcohol

Who does caramel apples with the skin intact ??? that was NOT cool.

LOL at their TVs not in sync; they were about 3 seconds off. They were the same channel. I’m not trying to nit-pick, I just think it was especially funny.

alright, I’m 3 styles of ribs down and honestly I don’t think they’re better than Shane’s… They are tasty and cooked well, just not what I was looking for, my palate isn’t impressed
What is the big idea with my soda costing more than a beer… Seriously, why must I be punished for not wanting alcohol ?

Well, I have finally finished my meal and reached a verdict: although the place was nice, server on point and food pretty decent, their ribs were not as enjoyable as Shane’s. But then again, what do I know ?  I was raised in Brooklyn.

If you know of a place that has really good ribs, let me know I shall check them out.
