Blackout in China

December 3, 2008

What’s it like to live in China? rough I’d imagine

What’s it like to be Black? I hear that’s pretty rough also…

but to be Black AND live in China??? I can’t even Imagine…

Fortunately, I have an amazing friend (Anime Sistuh) who’s over there right now on some business for her Job/Career, and she’s agreed to send me emails from the land of the rising sun the host of the 2008 summer Olympics.

And now, without further ado, Anime Sistuh;

Being one of the only Black faces in China is like being one of the few raisins on a very large oatmeal cookie.  Now I know I shouldn’t think like that while I’m traveling, but I can’t help but to notice other people’s reactions when they see me.  I feel like an exotic bird or some endangered feline species, fierce yet beautiful.  Having dreadlocks only intensifies the inherent curiosity of my Chinese counterparts.

A lot of women like my hair; they think it’s beautiful.  This is an encouraging response.  The expressions that paint their faces on our initial encounter are not ones of fear or disgust (sometimes seen on the faces of white Americans in similar situations), but pure fascination.  I’ve had my picture taken more times this week than all four years of college combined.

In scenes of business and pleasure, cameras seem to follow me.  Most photographers try to take pictures inconspicuously, others ask; I prefer the latter.  Yesterday, a guy with a huge Cannon camera followed me around for five minutes.  Of course, this only drew more attention to me and my colleagues.  My boss eventually got fed up and turned his camera on the man!  Needless to say, it was very funny.  One girl tried so hard for so long to get a good shot of me that I eventually turned to her and asked if she wanted to trade.  That stopped her in her tracks.  If this is what it feels like to be a celebrity than they can have it!

Well, that’s it for now…ttyl.

And there you have it. None of her letter has been edited, but it is interesting. I’ve decided I must visit this place and see for myself !!! (and maybe get some 5 fo $10 DVDs…)
