Black Power = Black Privilege ???

I planned on talking about Black History Month mainly because someone on Facebook brought up the interesting question on McDonald’s motives with discussing “365 Black” only in February… so here we go. 

So tending to 2 sick women (Ms. Blogmaster and Salt), the question was raised (by Salt’s white boyfriend who’s doing an anthropology paper) on the Privilege of Black people.  This on the twilight of Black History Month no less.

So we got the thinking.

and did some more thinking…

I even went so far as to ask four black people online. 

I mean sure, we heard things like “more financial aid”, “genetically more athletic”, even “Free use of the ‘N’ Word”. 

The problem is, no one had a real answer. NO one could answer the question. In the age of America finally getting a black president, and Black Coaches winning Super Bowls… We as a people still have no privileges. 

Think about this for a moment: What IS privilege? 

Dictionary.com says it’s: 

• a right, immunity, or benefit enjoyed only by a person beyond the advantages of most
• a special right, immunity, or exemption granted to persons in authority or office to free them from certain obligations or liabilities

and the list goes on.  Pretty much nothing that Wii we as a people can claim.

I did a little research to see what others had to say about this topic.

One author actually made a list of “Privileges” that black men seem to have. Personally, I’m skeptical about this list as it seems to have a pretty underhanded tone. It’s mildly NSFW. 

I want you to take the rest of this Black History Month to really marinate meditate on this topic. Let’s discuss it here. 

Is there a “Real” Privilege to being black ?

Respect Your Elders?

Growing up, you are always taught to respect your elders.

Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins older than you by 3 years, the nice old lady with the old candy and smelled like Moth balls… 

Didn’t matter. If they were older than you, you were to show them the UTMOST of respect. 

Ever notice that these people never quite showed YOU any respect?

You might not have noticed it when you were younger, but as you made your way into Adulthood, and eagerly anticipated all the responsibilities power that came with being an adult, there was something missing…

Respect.

Not just from the younger kids (because lets face it, they have NO home training)  

but from Adults. 

Especially Older Adults (Senior Citizens and such) 

Earlier today, I was in class with 1 half of twelvin; She got the attendance sheet for me since we came to class late.

I was also talking to our professor about an assignment that was due this evening, and out of no where “Madea” came and asked for the Attendance sheet. 

I’m sorry, “asked” isn’t the correct term. 

I was looking for something more like “reached across twelvin’s body to get the sheet as she asked for it at the same time.”

As Twelvin tried to defend herself she handed me the sheet and I was getting ready to sign as the teacher was wrapping it up. Madea then inSISted that the sheet be given to her so she could sign it.

I would like to take this time to mention that no “peer” would have tried something like that; We respect each other, and know how to wait our turns.

Madea? not so much. 

Instead of starting a situation in front of our teacher (and going against home training) we yielded and handed her the sheet, keeping a close eye to make sure the sheet didn’t disappear to the other side of the classroom.

As Twelvin and I were leaving we both mentioned that if “Madea” was in fact our age, we wouldn’t have reacted so passively. 

Is it just us? I’m afraid not.

This evening as I was stalking people looking for funny Facebook Statuses, I came across this:

R.R. –  understands you’re suppose to respect old people but I’m sorry some of them deserve to be cursed the hell out…

Naturally, I was intrigued, so I decided to investigate…

the 2 gentleman who responded both agreed with the Original Poster (OP). 

the next friend then warned of being physically reprimanded for insolence smacked for being rude. 

As I read this status discussion, it made me wonder “Do older people lack respect ?” 

I hit the interwebs, and asked a couple good friends about this.

One person felt that 

 ”the elders do, possibly because they think that they know everything due to their advanced age.

wisdom and knowledge are frequently confused

I never looked at it like that; confusing Wisdom and Knowledge

Another person felt that

” Generations don’t respect each other.. the old don’t respect the young and the young don’t respect the old. They (older generation) don’t understand the new generation and simply write us off as deviants.. not respecting or trying to understand us”

This seems to be a common theme that I’ve personally noticed; just because we’re younger, they automatically write us off as a waste of space.

Another Reader felt that 

“Since older people  had to earn it themselves, they just don’t give it out… I see that a lot especially in churches”

This was a REALLY good point. Growing up in church, I’ve personally noticed that the fancier the hat, the less respect they have for the young.

but WHY ?

I thought about maybe interviewing some older people about this; but… I’m afraid I’d have to end the interview early.

What are your thoughts? do you think older people have respect?

Monday Post 12 *Updated*

Hey Everybody 

It’s Monday. Super Bowl Champions have been crowned (I was supposed to go to a REALLY good party, but something came up).

Jennifer Hudson did an AMAZING job singing the National Anthem.

The Commercials this year were alright. I’m intrigued by the new Star Trek, saddened by not getting 3-D glasses to watch the commercials , and perplexed by the “new” “The Fast & The Furious” Movie.

Oh, and I loved the coke commercial with the online avatars.

and the coke commercial with the “A Bug’s Life” meets “Peter and the Wolf“. 

Am I (and the land of the ‘Noles, Rattlers, and Eagles) The only one’s who’s going to miss out on Denny’s kindness ? on Tuesday (2/3/09) they will be giving away FREE Grand Slam Breakfast’s to everyone. Free. Food. ALL of America.

I gave my first “I beat the Game” review.

Someone yelled about someone going to hell literally.

MellownMighty had a warm & fuzzy moment.

I introduced and implemented my facebook stalking new funny facebook status watch. (Don’t forget send me emails by Thursday.

There was bear on bear Violence in an office this week.

I had an interesting photo shoot. 

Finally, I discussed the possibilities of using the BCS system for graduation.

I picked up the “Afro Samurai” game over the weekend. I haven’t started playing it yet, I got other games schoolwork to tend to first.

Ok, I am thoroughly convinced that FISH stands for “Females In Secret Holdings from others”

I was chatting with #5 Last night *rewind* 

A few days before #5 had a mysterious FaceBook status alluding to the fact she had a surprise for a lot of people. Naturally, my “CSI-Senses” were tingling. I started asking questions, but all she would tell me is that it “involved nicknames” and that “a lot of love went into it”.  she also said that #11 might know something about it…

So… 

it’s official, I’m getting a dog. 

Not just any dog, but a dog I actually want.

Yes, this little dark brown ball of fuzz will be MINE. 

I hope…  

He’s a Pomeranian, and I’ve already started thinking of names for him… 

Fuzzmaster sounds like a winner to me … 

 

 

 

 

I’m presented with a few options as far as getting him.

If we buy him now, we could:

1. Try to “sneak” him into our complex and duck the pet fees and additional pet rent.
2. Pay the pet fees and additional pet rent.
3. Let him stay with a “Pet-Godparent” until we move. (is now taking applications)

*sighs* I’m at a crossroad… (NSFW!!!) *OK, here’s the real one*  I would hate to miss out on that ball of fuzz. He’s laid back, he wasn’t yipping and yapping like most “little dogs” like to do. and Mrs Blogmaster thought he was adorable which means she would be happy with him, which means I Win !!! 

What am I to do?
